You’re probably aware of the significance of healthy eating in cancer prevention. What is less discussed is the role that beverages can play.
Certain drinks can also increase your risk and should be avoided. Some of them will surprise you!
1. Tap Water
Water infrastructure in the United States is old and is not being fixed on time. Instead, the government promotes using hazardous chemicals to “clean up” dangerous biological pollutants. Chlorine is a regularly used chemical, but it is far less frightening than some of the other things discovered in our tap water.
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), for example, is a disinfection byproduct determined to be 1,000 times more hazardous than chlorine. The Environmental Working Group is a non-profit organization that does food and beverage testing.
It discovered possible human carcinogens in every tap water sample tested across 43 states. That puts the price of a water filter pitcher into mind, doesn’t it?
2. Water in Bottles
To begin with, regardless of how beautiful the picture of a mountain stream on the label seems, the water in bottled water may come from a municipal source.
The bottle, however, is the most dangerous component of bottled water. Not only is discarded plastic terrible for the environment, but it also leaches harmful chemicals into anything it comes into contact with.
Bisphenol-A, or BPA, is one noteworthy example. Even though it is a recognized hormone disruptor that raises the risk of prostate, breast cancer, and metabolic disorders, this chemical is utilized in many plastic water bottles.
3. Alcoholic Beverages
Excessive drinking has a lot of negative health repercussions, the most serious of which is cancer. Numerous studies link alcohol to cancers of the esophagus, stomach, liver, colon, and breast.
And while many people believe that red wine is healthy because of its antioxidant content, it still includes ethanol. Ethanol is the major carcinogen contained in alcoholic beverages. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends no more than one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men.
4. Energy Drinks
Energy drinks may make you feel unstoppable for a few hours, but they gradually harm your body from the inside out. They primarily contain sugar, caffeine, and artificial colors, raising your blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
People have died from excessive energy drinks, particularly cardiac problems and seizures. Anything that impairs your body’s processes can pave the way for cancer. Furthermore, sugar is cancer’s preferred food, and too many energy drinks include much of it, making it available to those killer cells.
5. Regular Soda
Soda has a lot of flaws, including no redeeming health benefits. It contains a lot of sugar, caffeine, and artificial additives, just like energy drinks. 4-MeI, a colorant, is one of the chemical additives. It imparts the brown color to cola but is also a proven carcinogen.
Regulations on the usage of 4-Mel vary by state. However, California requires it to be labeled as potentially carcinogenic on all food products containing it.
6. Diet Soda
Diet Coke includes little to no “real” sugar but a sugar substitute such as sucralose, saccharin, or aspartame.
These sugar substitutes are known to disrupt your body’s metabolic processes, increase fat storage, and potentially contribute to diabetes and heart disease. They have also been connected to bladder and urinary tract cancers.
7. Extremely Hot Drinks
Here’s one you generally avoid naturally, but the World Health Organization’s cancer agency, the IARC, has advised that drinking highly hot liquids can lead to throat cancer.
To qualify, the beverage must be at least 149 degrees Fahrenheit, and most people don’t enjoy their tea, coffee, or hot chocolate that hot.
The study focuses on maté, a beverage historically consumed at extremely high temperatures in Asia, South America, and Africa. There is no danger in your typical hot beverage, but we recommend that you wait until it cools to a safe temperature before taking a massive drink.
8. Fancy Coffee Drinks
Coffee, in general, is high in antioxidants and nutrients, and it may help prevent cancer. Regrettably, some coffee-based drinks include more sugar and cream than authentic coffee. Adding a lot of syrup, chocolate, caramel, or whipped cream to your coffee eliminates all of the benefits you may have started with.
A 20-ounce white chocolate mocha with whole milk and whipped cream, for example, has 580 calories and 26 grams of fat. Regular intake of rich coffee beverages can contribute to obesity, diabetes, and cancer.
9. Juice and Juice Drinks
“Juicing” is regarded to be beneficial, and it can provide essential vitamins and minerals. However, the fiber (pulp) and skin of whole fruits and vegetables provide most of the nourishment.
When you remove those, you lose critical nutrients and tend to consume a lot more because fiber helps you feel full. Furthermore, fiber slows absorption, preventing blood sugar spikes.
Juice drinking has been related to an increased risk of rectal cancer, most likely due to juice’s high sugar content. By this metric, certain juices compete with soda.
10. Smoothies from the store
Smoothies are preferred to juice because all of the beneficial fiber is maintained, although somewhat “digested” in the blender. However, always prepare your smoothies at home! Store-bought smoothies taste like desserts and have a smooth, creamy texture because they add a bunch of extra things that raise the fat and sugar level.
The fact that this trash lurks in cuisine we consider healthy is the issue; it’s too simple to load up on harmful ingredients without even recognizing it.
11. Sports Beverages
Although sports drinks do not directly cause cancer, they do provide a stepping stone along the route. Despite being touted as healthy, sports drinks are high in sugar and carbs. And, unless you work out all day, they are also unnecessary.
For the most part, stick to ordinary water because the extra calories in sports drinks can contribute to obesity and type 2 diabetes, which is associated with an increased risk of cancer.
Finally, filtered water is the finest for your body. Other beverages are acceptable in moderation but drink at least 2 liters of water each day before consuming anything else (your morning coffee aside, of course).
Regarding cancer prevention, what you drink is just as essential as what you eat, so keep track of those liquid calories.
